Notable growing up highlights were Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts, football, baseball, basketball, Philmont Scout Ranch (1976), Eagle Scout (1977), and high school marching band (trumpet) plus numerous high school service organizations (e.g., ACS and Key Club). As a teenager, Kent worked part time in an engineer testing lab. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School in 1980. Kent joined the Fighting Texas Aggie Band (FTAB) the summer of 1980. Since the FTAB unit is a member of the A&M Corps of Cadets, Kent attended Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) training
