Metabolism and activity of Thaumarchaeota in marine sediments is highly debated. We investigated the incorporation of 13C labeled substrates (HCO3- and organic) into specific thaumarchaeal lipids in sediment core incubations. The type of substrate and the degree of incorporation achieved would allow us to determine the metabolism and activity of the Thaumarchaeota. Incorporation was observed only at one station, where minor (1-4) enrichment in 13C was detected for incubations with bicarbonate and pyruvate, in contrast with bacterial lipids which showed incorporation of 13C up to +80 , suggesting high activity. This suggests Thaumarchaeota in marine sediments are not very active.]]>
