Two words: Body. Classes. Never let it be said that this flying fat broad has body issues. Oh no. How many times have you needed to tweak a category of posts to make some element fit a little better? Or had a site with some content aimed at fashion-conscious adults - and another set of posts aimed at their kids? You could use all sorts of fancy taxonomy - custom post types or multisite, or some other foolishness. But I just don't have the patience. But I do have a secret weapon. Body classes. They've gotten me out of more styling jams than Janet Jackson's wardrobe staff. (Wait. That's not saying much, is it?) Let's take a look at how a good look through all those classes on your body tags can lead you to a world of styling options - with no malfunctions allowed.

Structure style-story /slideshow/structure-stylestory/50009345 structure-style-story-150630145022-lva1-app6892
A WordPress site pulls together three different kinds of pixie dust to make its magic. Since it's me thinking about this, we can look at it as three baskets of tennis balls: Structure happens in two ways - internally, to organize the database and build HTML templates, and externally, as marketing and content strategy. Style gives the site its look and feel. And Story is the whole reason for the site in the first place. (As opposed to content, which usually sounds, to my ears, like an afterthought - this thing we add in at the end.) Where do these things go? Why? What happens if they get mixed up? Let's take a look, and make sure we get our pixie dust sorted into the right buckets of magic.

Designing for conversion /slideshow/designing-for-conversion/49613278 designingforconversion-150619192045-lva1-app6891
Changing the color of a button is never going to make or break a business concept. By and large, copy makes the sale. But design certainly plays a role -- that button color may in fact grab a few extra eyeballs along the way. And it's probably design that gets eyeballs to a site in the first place, by drawing in the folks who want our stuff and pushing away the ones who won't. So here's a look at what designing for conversion can be -- and definitely is NOT. Cheers! Presented June 13, 2015, WordCamp KC

In WordPress, doing creative things with design can seem like a job for a coding superstar. But it's not - you just need to be willing to cut, paste and edit three files. Do that, and you can make a WordPress site look like anything you want!
