Coaching is both a science and an art. The science of sport - if you like - the "what" that coaches and athletes do - can be described as the "CONTENT" of workouts i.e. programs, training sessions etc. It's all the things you can see, you can measure, you can purchase, you can download. The science of sport is all the tangible, measurable, observable aspects of coaching and athletic performance. However - the things that have the greatest value in sport - the most enduring - the most important - are the things that are often difficult to see, hard to measure and impossible to buy. Qualities such as confidence, commitment, mental toughness, resilience, passion, drive, enthusiasm...these qualities are integral to athletic success yet are often overlooked. These are the "how" and the "why" factors in coaching - the "art" of coaching. When a coach writes a training session or develops a workout plan, they do so with one under-pinning assumption: that the athlete will perform the workout with the "INTENT" with which it was written. In other words, it's not the "sets" and the "workload" or the "heart-rate" only that determines the effectiveness of training: it's the coach's ability to teach, to educate and to connect with the athlete and in doing so inspire that athlete to perform the CONTENT with the INTENT with which it was written that makes all the difference. It is the art of coaching which drives the science of sport and a coach or an athlete who understands both the "how" and the "what" of planning, preparation and performance can achieve remarkable things. ]]>

Sporting Parents and The Partnership of Potential: Athletes - Coaches and Parents /slideshow/sporting-parents-and-the-partnership-of-potential-athletes-coaches-and-parents/89240662 sportingparents-180301042342
Every parent - at some stage in their parenting - will be a sporting parent, i.e. the parent of a child who is playing some kind of sport at school, after school, in a club etc. Just as there is no "text-book" on all aspects of parenting in general, there is no easy to find and simple to understand resource to help parents learn how to be effective sporting parents. Traditional models of junior sport and athlete development have in many ways "marginalized" the role of parents. However, increasingly it is important that all sports - all coaches and all schools enthusiastically embrace parents as critical partners in helping a young athlete realize his or her sporting potential. ]]>
