My doctoral dissertation research is being conducted in Peru, in the Andean highlands that surround Cusco and Machu Picchu, two icons that have a hold on the imaginations of tourists the world over. My project concerns the consequences for locals as a result of the privitization of Cusco Peru's heritage to the transnational tourist industry. I am looking at two local communities struggles to stake their own claims on that heritage in the midst of massive foreign capital investment in key infrastructural resources.
