To Boldly Go Where Few Have Gone Before: Global eResource Management in the Cloud /slideshow/to-boldlygowherefewhavegonebefore/33943911 toboldlygowherefewhavegonebefore-140425093947-phpapp02
Staff in libraries around the world locally track serials and e-resources in an effort to provide users with access to information. What is subscribed to; which titles are available through which publishers/aggregators; and dates local users have access to. Libraries invest considerable resources maintaining bibliographic, license and coverage information. Have you ever wondered if it is feasible to share bibliographic records and license records with other libraries? What if publishers and vendors updated title lists and coverage details? In 2012, the University of Nebraska Omaha decided to implement a cloud-based discovery platform that manages collection materials in a global environmentWorldShare Management System (WMS) & WorldCat Local (WCL). There is no longer a local catalog, only local access to global records. Attend this session to learn how UNO transitioned from a traditional ERMs to global e-resource management. Find out what it means to have real-time metadata updates, coverage data and title lists updated by publishers/vendors and how to reap the benefits of global license record templates. This session will also discuss the lessons learned and best practices for preparing library staff for this radical shift in e-resource management as we boldly go where few have gone before. ]]>

Do I Have the Best Library Website on the Planet or What? /rerlandson/bc2011-presentationfinal bc2011-presentation-final-131114115609-phpapp02
In the past decade, many libraries redefined their user communities, their sphere of influence and their obligation to the communities they serve. Gone were the geographic limitations which previously influenced the physical library space and the content of library Websites. Libraries began to look for ways to connect users with resources beyond local collections. The philosophical shift in libraries, from local to global, was reflected in the evolution of library Websites into information portals. Users no longer visit library Websites solely for information about the local library. Instead visitors now expect library Websites to provide access to information resources found in collections throughout the world. During the development of library managed information portals, many library Websites became dumping grounds for links to vast numbers of off-site collections and to the administrative minutia of the hosting library, leaving patrons struggling to navigate through multiple layers of pages and menus in order to finally access the desired information. Usage data and usability testing provide the basis for library development of effective, user-friendly interfaces. A successful library Website meets the needs of the user--it is easy to navigate, aesthetically pleasing and results in few errors. Time spent analyzing an institutions Website will result in a better user experience for virtual library visitors, leaving them with a positive feeling about the library. These slides highlight website usage data collection applications, define usability, outline formal usability testing methods, discuss how to integrate collected information with future website development, outline a sustainable usability schedule and discuss some of the usability study pitfalls and successes encountered by University of Nebraska Omaha Library. 際際滷s are from a session presented at Brick & Click: An Academic Library Symposium, 2011, by Rene J.
