Customers will always opt for the path of least resistance. Why wait for an agent’s response when you can self-serve immediately? It’s little wonder customers place such great value on intuitive, guided, and simple help centers. They won’t tolerate a jumble of predetermined questions and irrelevant information. They want the one right answer to their question and to leave as quickly as they arrived. So what’s the best way to deliver a great self-service support experience for your customers? It means making sure your support content consistently delivers accuracy and clarity, whilst drawing on your team’s collective knowledge. In this session, you’ll learn how to eable and empower non-writers to write effective technical content, maintain living resources, like pattern libraries and style guides and use content testing methods that went beyond heuristics and analytics.]]>

One of the great challenges of user experience design - and especially of content production – is getting ideas from the heads of subject matter experts into the heads of content designers. Often the people with topical expertise are too busy to produce content or unable to communicate their expertise in a way that serves the intended audience, but their input is crucial to make sure we write knowledgeably and accurately about a subject. Enter pair writing. Inspired by the agile technique of pair programming, pair writing brings together subject matter experts and content designers right from the start to create clear, concise, accurate content that meets user needs. Maps are more than just diagrams of the route from A to B – to draw one is to bring together the whole view of our surrounding world so that we can gain a better understanding of it. Even a single, simple example has the ability to delight, unsettle and reveal truths. In politically-charged environments an objective visual map can reinforce, influence or challenge held perceptions and beliefs, making them a vital tool in designing pliable, people-focused content systems that are fit for purpose. Their proactive and reactive qualities force ourselves and others to see things as they really are; to contemplate the relationship between them and how they vary together. Presented at the IA Summit 2015 in Minneapolis on 25th April 2015.]]>
