He told me the great Charlie Parker (whom we both admired) became brilliant only after he had every scale—Dorian, Phrygian, whatever—under his fingers. He practiced for hours and hours. Just scales. I said, "big deal. It's because he could make stuff up; that's why he was creative." Mr. Van Doren said Charlie needed to know what notes were expected to be played with each key and chord in a piece of music, so he could play the unexpected.
