We often associate the need for leadership skills with being in a management position. But...we start needing them a lot earlier in our career to succeed and have a positive impact. The diverse workspaces and communities are here to stay, though almost none of us have learned in school how to thrive in diversity. Nor how to be inclusive. We are all somewhere on a journey of inclusive leadership! In this talk we can find out how to asses where we are. And why we should approach inclusive leadership with a beginners mindset, try to do better, make mistakes, learn, repeat. And why we should all be hyped about it. Talk presented at EuroPython 2024 on 11 July 2024]]>

Its been 15 years since the term data scientist has become one of the most sought-after professions. Nevertheless, if you ask a lot of data scientists what their profession is you will get very different answers, which will mostly depend on the kinds of companies they work for. Talk given at CodeTalks 2023 in Hamburg. So how does one learn Data Science when the definition of the field is open to interpretation? Or, when putting together all the job descriptions, in order to become a Data Scientist one would need to know all the theory, and new approaches and be able to use hundreds of tools. In this talk, we will explore the fundamentals needed to be a data scientist, from the perspective of theory, tooling, and approaches. We will talk about some of the common misconceptions people starting to learn data science have. And about some of the reframing that I have seen successful learners have done on their path to data science. And what role do large language models play in the future of learning data science?]]>

Presented at DataLift Summit 2022 in Berlin. Video: https://youtu.be/U9Q7H4T6_wc Every company wants to hire Data Scientists these days. But what is a Data Scientist? The role is quite broad, Data Science is a team effort, and many job descriptions want everything. It is also not clear if the companies know what role they need or want what they need. It can be frustrating getting a job only to discover it has nothing to do with what you expected. There are so many things one can read between the lines and get some idea about how realistic the job description is. How advanced is the data infrastructure? How diverse and inclusive is the culture? This talk is relevant both for people looking for new roles in Data Science and for companies that strive to do better with their job descriptions and culture and attract data scientists that fit their needs. Decoding Data Science Job Descriptions /slideshow/decoding-data-science-job-descriptions-250687704/250687704 decodingdatasciencejobdescriptions-211119221549
It seems like every company wants to hire Data Scientists these days and Data Science is such a broad field that it is not clear from most job descriptions what the role they need is. It is also not clear if they know what role they need or want what they need. It can be really frustrating getting a job only to discover it has nothing to do with what you expected. There are though so many things one can read between the lines, and from that get some idea about how realistic is the job description, how advanced their data infrastructure, and most importantly to see how diverse and inclusive their culture is. In this talk, I will present some of my tricks to analyze companies and jobs. In this talk, I will present some of my tricks to analyze companies and jobs. And this is relevant both for people looking for new roles in Data Science and for companies that strive to do better with their job descriptions and culture. And this is relevant both for people looking for new roles in Data Science and for companies that strive to do better with their job descriptions and culture. Talk presented at ByteAdventures 2021 This April I participated in the 30DayChartChallenge and to make things interesting, after the first day, I've decided on combining this with my old dream of learning D3.js. This talk is about that journey, we will go through 30 data stories, how I found the data, sometimes collected it, charted it, and charted it again and again. Topics range from politics, to global warming and gender equality and ABBA.]]>

A lot of people want to work in data science and a lot of companies want to have successful data science teams. Nevertheless, we often hear stories about unmet expectations on both employee and employer sides. In this talk we will navigate the world of data science in industry and see where the line between magic and reality lies. Talk given at Big Data & AI World Frankfurt 2020]]>
