Definitions in Ornamental Horticulture
1. Cut Flower: Cut flowers are fresh flower harvested in
clusters / spike or in single along with their stem.
2. Loose Flowers: The flowers which are usually
harvested without stalk and used for Garland.
3. Floriculture: It is a aesthetic branch of Horticulture
which deals with growing, selling designing and arranging
flowers and foliage plant.
4. Commercial Floriculture: This branch deals with the
cultivation of economic flowers like Rose, Jasmines,
Chrysanthemum, Gladiolus, Tuberose etc. production of
cut flowers and gift plants.
6. Vase Life of Flowers: How long the flowers kept in
the containers remain fresh is referred as vase life of
flowers.
7. Landscape Gardening: It consists of planning and
arrangement of home gardens. Public garden for bio -
aesthetic purpose.
8. Ornamental Horticulture: It refers to the study of
various groups of ornamental plants which are used to
decorate in door and out door gardens.
9. Bio - aesthetic Planning: It refers to the proper
utilization of the available flora and fauna in the
beautification of the surroundings.
Importance of ornamental
horticulture
Flowers have been considered as the symbol of beauty and
elegance and a feast for our eyes.
They are used on all religious festival occasions.
Flowers are given as a birthday presents, wedding gifts or
while meeting sick people and even at funerals.
 Most Hindu ladies adhere their; hair style with flowers
It is one of the important floral ornament which will and

Generally flowers are offered by devotees in Temple,
Gurudwara, Church and Masjids.

• Scope of ornamental horticulture:
 There is a good scope for commercial floriculture.
 The important factors which decide the scope for
commercial floriculture are soil, climate, labor, transport
and market.
 All most all big cities are developing very speedily to
accommodate this fast growing population, cement concrete
is also developing at the same rate.
 Thus peoples are now realizing the importance of open
space, parks and garden for relaxation, peace of mind,
recreation and unpolluted air.
 Thus, to meet out all these problems bio-aesthetic planning
is essential, which runs hand in hand with town planning.
 In modern life floriculture garden in the country yard is an
integral part of the modern life and thus ornamental plants
has find a pride of place in home gardening.
 As far as flower trade is concerned i.e. for cut flowers
and loose flowers, it is growing very well in our country
because these cut flowers are used for vase decoration
and now-a-days there is a craze for indoor decoration.
 As far as loose flowers are concerned these are mainly
used for preparation of garland and bouquets and thus
demand of flowers for these purpose is unending.
 Thus, taking into consideration the different points i.e.
bio-aesthetic planning, floral garden, indoor
decoration, social functions and religious functions the

day.
