What are
idioms?
Idioms are phrases in which the actual meaning cannot
be derived from the literal meaning of the words used,
meaning they don't always make sense literally.

Beat around the bush
Meaning: to avoid saying what you mean,
usually because it is uncomfortable
Usage: as a part of the sentence
Example: Dont beat around the bush. Were
running out of time. Please get to the point.
Better late than never
Meaning: better to arrive or do something
late than not to come or do at all.
Usage: by itself
Example: Im not sure if I will get to her party
on time. Well, better late than never.
Bite the bullet
Meaning: to force yourself to do something
difficult or unpleasant or to be brave in a
difficult situation because its inevitable.
Usage: as a part of the sentence
Example: I hate to talk about pay raise with my
boss, but I will have to bite the bullet.
Call it a day
Meaning: to stop what you are doing
because you dont want to do it any more or
think youve done enough .
Usage: as a part of the sentence
Example: Youve been sitting in front of the
computer for 5 hours. Lets call it a day and go
out for a breath of fresh air.
Break a leg
Meaning: good luck, used to wish someone
especially before a performance.
Usage: by itself
Example: Tomorrow is my final stage

Hang in there
Meaning: Dont give up.
Usage: by itself
Example: Starting your own business is a tough

Meaning: Go to sleep.
Usage: as a part of the sentence
Example: I have a busy day tomorrow. I am
going to hit the sack now.
Its not rocket science
Meaning: Its not complicated to do or
understand.
Usage: by itself
Example: Public speaking is scary . Its not
rocket science.
Make a long story short
Meaning: its used to indicate that you are
explaining what happened in a few words
rather than providing all the details.
Usage: by itself
Example: To make a long story short, I didnt
enjoy the party yesterday.
