A Review on 99 Cahaya di Langit Eropa Part 1
99 Cahaya di Langit Eropa Part 1 (99 Lights at the Sky of Europe Part 1) is a 2013 Islamic
Indonesian movie directed by Guntur Soeharjanto and written by Alim Sudio. The movie
casts Acha Septriasa, Abimana Aryasatya, and Raline Shah. The movie is based on Hanum
Salsabiela Rais and Rangga Almahendra, 99 Cahaya di Langit Eropa (2011), that based on
their true story. It was released at theatres on November 29, 2013. The movie takes the
theme of religion and Islamic history in Europe.
The story begins when Hanum (Acha Septriasa), and her husband Rangga (Abimana
Aryasatya) are embracing their new life in Vienna, Austria, after Rangga accepts a
scholarship for graduate school. Hanum then meets Fatma (Raline Shah), a Turkish lady who
shows her the many traces of Islam’s inheritance and history throughout Europe. She tried
to make amends her forefathers who failed to conquer Europe with a sword and a cannon.
Now she tried again with a more elegant way, with a smile the width and depth of the ocean
humility. Meanwhile, Rangga and his Pakistani friend Khan (Alex Abbad) also struggle to
adjust to their Islamic life, especially when it comes to halal food and praying space. They
are exposed to new values, which often clash with their religious lifestyle. They all receive so
many disrespecfulness from people there. But, all they do is give kindness to them. And
then they turn to be respectful and nice to them.
After soaking herself in the history of Islam in and around Vienna, Hanum decided she wants
to see more. Fatma puts her in touch with Marion (Dewi Sandra), a French woman who
converted to Islam after learning about the religion’s history. Hanum’s journey will be
portrayed in the second installment of the movie.
Guntur also added extra bits to enhance the drama in the movie. One of these parts comes
when Rangga teaches his friend Stefan (Nino Fernandez), who is very skeptical about Islam,
to fast. It is a scene close to reality, as fasting is a religious activity that usually alarm non-
Muslim people.
This film represented the whole novel with more simple words. It easier to understand the
movie rather than the novel. The moral value delivered well. This film shows the beauty of
many European country and many historical traces in Europe.
Maxima Pictures was working with the European Union while making while making the
movie. According to the Guntur, he didn't mind the potrayal of secularism in the story.
It was pretty interesting that Hanum decided to choose Maxima Pictures, mostly known for
making cheap horror movies such as Air Terjun Pengantin.
Overall, 99 Cahaya di Langit Eropa is an amazing religion movie. The movie take the Austria
view and other country in Europe. Although this movie tells about Islamic atmosphere,
didn't stop people with other religion to watch it. This film is very recommended to watch.
