Discrimination of migrants in host communities creates a negative cycle. Host countries discriminate against migrants for a perceived lack of assimilation, yet discrimination discourages assimilation. Post-colonial theory is best suited for analyzing this problem, as discrimination results from the "othering" of migrants through social and psychological exclusion. A brief history outlines increasing discrimination and restrictive policies against migrants in the US from the early 20th century to modern day.
