This document provides instructions for creating an autonomous Oracle database instance on Oracle Cloud and notes some key findings about the service. To create an instance, the user selects ADWS under create instance, enters details on the next pages, and the instance is immediately backed up once created. Some key aspects of the autonomous database service are that Oracle 18c software is made autonomous through hardware and optimizations, scaling can be done without outages, database administrators have no direct access or control, and datafiles use ACFS storage instead of ASM disk groups.

AUTONOMOUS ORACLE DATABASE
Scale service
Findings
1. 18c is not autonomous but with Exadata hardware and secret sauce (sql
tuning/metric corrective actions/storage index) made 18c to autonomous
managed service.
2. No outage for scaling up/down like Oracle public cloud.
3. Its a managed service, no ssh for connecting to the database instance-
HERE is AUTONOMOUS. No control for onsite DBA (example - to create
index or partitions)
4. I raised question for Flashback or Recyclebin features to restore not
available at this stage.
5. Database is pluggable database.
6. In Memory parameter is on.
7. Datafiles are on ACFS (ASM Cloud file system) not ASM disk group.
