These human rights defenders include lawyers, journalists, women’s rights activists, and those fighting against displacement and other issues. Towards the end of the session, the participants were requested to share their ideas and suggestions on how can we strengthen the network and effectively fight against human rights violations in Jharkhand through law.

Resistance to the Second Vatican Council: The Spread of Unauthorised Mass Cen...Cometan“Are you in union with your bishop, the bishops of the whole Church and the Pope or are you not?” The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales posed this question in October 1976 to a small group of Roman Catholics organising ‘Mass centres’ in their homes or renting village halls for priests of the Saint Pius V Association (SPVA) to celebrate Mass in the Tridentine Rite despite the Church’s abandonment of that rite following the Second Vatican Council in 1965. This lecture traces the history of ‘Mass centres’ in Britain, from their origins in the work of the travelling priest Peter Morgan in southern England in 1971, their expansion northward in 1974 to their peak popularity from 1975 to 1978. Also discussed is how Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre amalgamated the SPVA into the Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) in 1979, leading to many ‘Mass centres’ being replaced by bona fide churches for exclusively celebrating the Tridentine Mass before Archbishop Lefebvre was excommunicated in 1988. Most SSPX churches in Britain today owe their origins to these early ‘Mass centres’ that represented a grassroots movement of Catholics torn between adhering to the pre-conciliar liturgy and obeying the Pope.

- 2. Terrified Ahmadis are seeking government protection after an extremist group circulated pamphlets branding them “fit to be killed.”
- 3. The All Pakistan Students Khatam-e-Nabuwat Federation recently handed the pamphlets out in public areas in Faisalabad in Punjab province,
- 4. inciting people to kill members of the minority Muslim sect, who believe Muhammad was not the last prophet.
- 5. The pamphlets also included a hit-list containing the names of 32 businessmen, teachers and doctors along with their addresses.
- 6. Law enforcement agencies say it’s a joint campaign by different terrorist organizations.
- 7. “We need to identify these people among us who are bewitching us; their punishment is death
- 8. . Killing them in an open market is jihad and virtuous. So awaken your conscience … and achieve the status of martyrdom,” the pamphlets read.
- 9. Concerned Ahmadis have met with police commissioner and other officials to present them with the list and demand protection.
- 10. “Fatwas declaring usWajibulqatal[fit to be killed] have been issued in the past but this is a direct threat. The targeted people are in dire danger,” said Saleem-ud-din, an Ahmadi spokesperson.
- 11. He said security forces need to do more to help threatened minorities.
- 12. “Our guards captured a suicide attacker in April outside a worship place in Lahore but police later freed him due to political pressure from hardliners,” he said adding that three Ahmadi businessmen were murdered in Faisalabad last year.
- 13. TheAsian Human Rights Commissionalso urged the government to prevent more Ahmadi killings in a statement on June 11.
- 14. “Once the killings start it will be too late and the government will not be able to use the excuse that they had no time to prepare.
- 15. Action must be taken against any person or group openly declaring their nefarious designs of mass killings,” it stated.
