This album cover for Arctic Monkeys' album "Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not" features a close-up image of a man smoking. The smoking image suggests the band is not afraid to be controversial and helps create a grungy, rock theme. The cover's minimalist design with only the band's name complements the indie rock genre. The man's rugged appearance representing a working class persona ties to stereotypes of indie rock band members and appeals to a wide working class audience.

Album analysis 2
1. -This album cover is for their
album ‘Whatever people say I
am, That’s what I'm not’.
The image of a man smoking
is almost commercialising
smoking to the audience. This
suggests that arctic monkeys
are not afraid to be
controversial.
- Also through the image of
smoking, and the black and
white effect of the photo, this
creates a grungy, rock theme
which we also find in the
music.
-The presentation of the band
through this album could
argue that the representation
is negative due to the album
cover, back cover and CD
cover to be aimed at smoking,
almost glamorising it. This
could suggest that this band is
a ‘rebel’ band which sings
about the roughness and
-The only title used on the
front cover is the logo of the
band which is their band
name.
The font compliments the rest
of the album and carries the
‘indie rock’ genre of the band.
The outlay of the cover is very
minimalistic and lacks key
information which the
audience may need such as
ratings of the album and what
the title of the album is.
-The close up angle of the man’s
appearance is very rough and
rugged through the bearded face,
creased clothing and his action of
smoking. This links to the
stereotypical appearance of a
indie rock band member.
The representation is of a
mainstream working class
man, suggesting that the
music may contain the
views and opinions of this
social group. It's
representation of class
means it is of wide appeal
to the large working class
audience.
2. -We see a constant use
of the label’s logo on the CD cover, back
cover and inside booklet. This shows the
audience the ownership of the band and the
album. This could also be used for copyright.
-The image used on the CD cover is of used
cigarettes which connotes grungy and a dark
style.
-The layout of each song is
easy to read apart from
there are no numbers next
to each song which may
cause the audience to take
longer in finding a
particular song they like on
the CD.
-The background of the inner cover uses
the similar plain background used on the
cover photo. The addressing of the
audience is presented in small text in
large paragraphs which may find difficult
to read.
-The man we see in the photo on the front of the album cover is the same
on the back cover but uses a different body language. This could connote
sadness, upset or he may have smoke in his eye suggesting humour.
