Aljustrel is one of the oldest settlements in Portugal characterized by its vast fields and plains as far as the eye can see. It was originally called Vipasca by the Romans and later Albasturil by the Arabs who conquered it in 1234 and it was granted to the Order of Santiago de Espada. Aljustrel is memorable for its mineral deposits and has had metallurgical activity since the Copper Age approximately 5,000 years ago.
