American Samoa is a U.S. territory located in the South Pacific Ocean. Major figures in its history include William Seward who orchestrated the deeds of cession of Tutuila and Aunu'u to the United States in 1900, and Malietoa Laupepa who was the last King or Tafa'ifa of Samoa. The United States sought to control Samoa in order to establish naval bases to support its fleets operating in the Western Pacific, culminating in the establishment of a U.S. Navy coaling station in Pago Pago Bay.
