Audience Research Quantitative
When asked which subgenre of horror the audience preferred their reply was as shown in the pie chart. With the vast majority voting that they prefer thriller as the subgenre it leads to the understanding that the most popular horror movies in this demographic are films such as: the ‘Saw’ series and ‘Hostel’. These more graphic films share the common horror genre and are reminiscent of action thrillers in the similar use of suspense and the cautious build up to an eventual climax. On the other hand there is the possible misinterpretation of the question, understanding it as thriller being separate to the horror subgenres and preferring thriller as a genre in itself.
The research shows that the demographic gain their understanding for films through trailers and friends. From this data we can decipher that our demographic is already a regular consumer of visual media. Not only this, furthermore, it is in the form of cinema trailers. With just this data we can confidently say that our demographic is socially interactive, interacting with friends for information on a movie and the social gathering that is going to the cinema to watch a film.
This data shows that the demographic questioned are not passive consumers of the media. They actively search for information about a film before viewing it. Once again this shows the interaction the audience have with the media they consume.
From this chart it is clear that three quarters of the people that research a film before watching it use IMDb as their point of reference. This allows opportunities as it is possible for independent companies to have their films hosted on IMDb by filling in some formal agreements and are then queued, waiting to be processed. This gives the opportunity for us to host our movie on IMDb for free and gain some relevant attention.
In this chart we see that of the 70 people questioned only 11 of them would go out and buy a movie as a DVD. This may not be reflective of their feelings toward a film. Due to the age of the demographic it may simply be that they are not in a position were they can go and spend money on a DVD. This is a massive assumption to make based on a simple question but with generic conventions about our demographic there is the understanding that their use of the internet is greater than at any other age. With this, it reinforces the preferred viewing style, which is discussed in a later question.
This question was asked to determine which famous horror film was preferred so that research could be done into the styles used in that film and generate a film that our demographic would recognise. What we failed to address was the movies and their remakes. They may very well be all misunderstood as the remakes to the original film however at the time when questioned the answers were referring to the original movies. This could have caused a different outcome.
Ways in which people watch their movies (rank order) These charts refer to the methods of viewing our demographic uses. Clearly, watching movies online via download or streaming is the most used method. There can be a separate discussion about how much this hurts the film industry but the information from this chart indicates the style in which our demographic is likely to watch our film. The simple matter is that our demographic has already stated that they first gain their attention toward a from movie trailers at the cinema. With this in mind there is also the fact that once they have been made aware of a movie they are likely to research it online and then more likely than not to finally view it online. To conclude we find out that our demographic are active consumers of the media through their understanding and research into movies but due to their general lack of funds have to be conservative and so much of their time spent on films is done online in either research or viewing.
