The Battle of Stalingrad took place from August 1942 to February 1943 between German and Axis forces and the Soviet Red Army. Over 1 million soldiers fought in brutal winter conditions for control of the city of Stalingrad, a strategic industrial center on the Volga River. In November 1942, the Soviets successfully encircled over 200,000 German and Axis troops in Stalingrad, eventually forcing their surrender by early February 1943 after running out of supplies.
