3. Production of Movie
-One of my favorite movie of the year is Richard Linklaters Boyhood, which tells the story
of a young boys childhood from age 5 to age 18. Youve probably also heard that the
movie was filmed over the course of 12 years using the same actors.
-While the film was shot over short periods from 2002 to 2013
(nearly a 12 years span), production also included a year of pre-
production and two years of post-production. The film
production employed a crew of 400 over that time. Variety
reports that IFC gave Boyhood a financial commitment of
$200,000 per year the total Boyhood budget is roughly $2.4
million.
-The completed film ended up running 164 minutes,
comprised of a whopping 143 scenes.
4. Boyhood began filming without a completed script. Linklater had prepared
each character's basic plot points, and the endingincluding the final shot
but otherwise wrote the script for the next year's filming after rewatching the
previous year's footage, incorporating the changes he saw in each actor. All
major actors participated in the writing process, contributing their life
experiences; for example, Hawke's character is based on his and Linklater's
fathersboth Texan insurance agents who divorced and remarriedand
Arquette's character is based on her mother, who resumed her education later
in life and became a psychotherapist.
Despite the unconventional screenwriting process, Linklater stated that he had a
general storyline in mind, and that the actors did not change the general
direction of the story:
People think I asked Ellar, "What did you do in school the other day? Let's
make a scene about that!" That never happened. The time we spent together
was me just gauging where he was at in his lifewhat his concerns were and
what he was doing. Then I would think, maybe we could move the camping trip
up, we can do this or that.
5. One aspect of Boyhood thats been relatively underdiscussed
(assuming there are any such left) is its use of 35mm, which has
been widely noted but little parsed. Richard Linklaters repeatedly
noted that the primary reason for shooting on film over 12 years
was to ensure visual continuity from one year to the next
6. Paramount Home Media Distribution has acquired the U.S. home
entertainment distribution rights to Richard Linklaters Boyhood, from IFC
Films.
The studio will handle all physical and digital home entertainment distribution
of the film following its theatrical run, with IFC Films handling VOD and sales
to cable, satellite and telecommunication providers. IFC will release the film on
some VOD platforms day-and-date with Paramounts home video release.
The film, starring Ethan Hawke, Patricia Arquette, Lorelei Linklater and Ellar
Coltrane, was shot over the course of a dozen years and has earned a 100 score
on Metacritic. Boyhood has grossed $14.4 million in limited domestic theatrical
release off a budget of $4 million.
