New information regarding Troops To Trucks. Interested in getting your FREE Commercial Driver’s License? The Troops to Trucks program is an expedited and seamless process to assist veterans obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and ease the transition into civilian employment. Through a partnership with The Governor’s Office of Workforce Development and The Department of Labor, The Department of Driver Services (DDS) offers this program at several different DDS locations throughout the state. There are 3 ways to gain a CDL and start your new career! 1. Veterans who are in their 90 days before or after discharge and have a DA348 with Tractor Trailer endorsements can visit their local DDS center to take the written and free test up to 3 times. A driving test is not required. This is paid for by a grant through the U.S. Department of Labor. 2. Veterans who have not driven in a while and have a DA348 with Tractor Trailer endorsements can take a two week driving course at Albany Tech located at 1704 S. Slappey Blvd, Albany, GA 31701 and Atlanta Technical College located at 1560 Metropolitan Pkwy SW, Atlanta, GA 30310. Veterans will take a short refresher course with a written test and driving test to earn the CDL. This course does not qualify for the HOPE grant and the cost will vary depending on the school. This options costs more than the 8 week course. 3. Veterans with or without a tractor trailer endorsement can take an eight week course, pass the exam, and get connected with employment opportunities. This free course is recognized and endorsed by all truck companies. Eligible veterans can take this training for free.
