The U.S. military has had a long history in Alaska dating back to the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867. During World War II, the military built numerous bases across Alaska including an airfield near Galena. This became Galena Air Force Base and played an important role during the Cold War by intercepting Soviet aircraft. The base closed in 1993 after the Cold War ended. However, the facilities were converted into the Galena Interior Learning Academy, a boarding high school that provides education for rural Alaskan students.

1) J.T.E. Lavoie was the meteorologist, geologist, customs officer, and surveyor on Capt. Bernier's 1910-11 Canadian Government Arctic expedition. 2) On the expedition, Lavoie led two impressive sledding expeditions. The first in 1910 charted previously unknown areas of Baffin Island's west coast, and the second in 1911 continued this surveying work. 3) In 1911, Lavoie's face was severely burned in an accident with a gasoline can. He was cared for by Inuit companions and eventually recovered, though he was disfigured for life.

The General Warren, a steamship owned by Abernethy & Clark, sank off the coast of Oregon after attempting to cross the Columbia River bar during a storm. The ship was overloaded with loose wheat cargo and took on water quickly. When it turned back to Astoria harbor, the ship became unmanageable in the strong tide and storm conditions. Captain George Flavel, the bar pilot, beached the ship on Clatsop Spit, but it was already breaking apart in the heavy surf. Many passengers and crew drowned in the sinking, though some were able to get to shore in the ship's one remaining lifeboat.

With limited support from Washington, Conner had to expand his squadron, secure necessary supplies of coal, food and water, and ready his fleet to transport and support General Winfield Scott's army of 14,000 troops. Through decisive action, the landing was achieved without loss of life on March 9th. However, Conner's poor health led to his being relieved by Commodore Matthew Perry, who then provided naval support during the successful siege and capture of Veracruz.
