Open Source Electronic Resource Management Systems:?ERMes and CORAL (ALA Annu...Galadriel Chilton
?
PowerPoint slides for the presentation given June 26, 2011 at the American Librarian Association's Annual Conference in New Orleans, LA.
Presentation Description: To tame the complex and ever-changing electronic resource management landscape, electronic resource management systems need to be flexible, evolving and affordable. Two such systems are ERMes and CORAL, developed by libraries for libraries and made freely available. ERMes runs in Microsoft Access and is suitable for small and medium libraries. Released in summer 2010, CORAL, is a modular, web-based system. Presenters will discuss the development, use and future plans for each system.
The Indian and Japanese rowing teams agreed to an annual rowing race. After losing the first year by one mile, the Indian team established an analyst team to determine why. They found the Japanese team had 7 rowers and 1 captain, while the Indian team had 7 captains and 1 rower. In response, the Indian team hired consultants who concluded there were too many captains and too few rowers. They restructured the team to have 4 captains, 2 managers, 1 top manager, and 1 rower. The next year, Japan won by 2 miles, so the Indian team replaced the rower. However, management was still awarded bonuses for their efforts in preparing the team.

Shalom Enterprises manufactures solar powered electric fencing systems that use solar energy to generate a high voltage electric pulse along the fencing wire. The system deters intruders with a painful but safe shock and includes an alarm that sounds if the fence is tampered with. The fencing components include solar panels, batteries, a charge controller, energizer to amplify the voltage, and insulated fencing wire mounted on poles. The system provides effective security with low maintenance as it operates on solar power without needing electricity.

Technology investments in curriculum, assessments, and data-driven instruction can provide big returns in student performance and attitudes. Specifically:
1) Using technology to individualize curriculum based on data from assessments allows schools to better understand student abilities and needs.
2) Research shows consistent technology access and professional development are associated with universal and significant increases in standardized test scores.
3) Technology engages students by allowing active and collaborative learning through tools like smart boards, simulations, and online discussion boards. Students are more excited to learn with these methods.
The document discusses precautionary measures taken at Brunei International Airport from May 21-24, 2009 due to the H1N1 outbreak. All incoming passengers will undergo thermal screening for temperatures. Brunei is currently free from H1N1 but quarantine measures are in place at airports and seaports. Travelers may experience delays exiting the airport due to additional screening. Conference transportation will wait for attendees who provided flight details to transfer them to their hotels.
The document discusses the evolution of e-learning and its impact on post-secondary education. It notes that while Canada has highly educated populations, its post-secondary institutions have been slower than others to incorporate online learning. E-learning changes the experience for both students and instructors. Knowledge economies require a flexible workforce that can adapt to changing environments, and e-learning allows for more natural progression of learning. Differences in access to technology and information represent a digital divide that affects learning opportunities.
From a presentation at APWA - I used AutoCAD Map 3D to demonstrate various principles - they don't come across in the PDF. Maybe I'll post a video, or maybe video supplements.
In the actual presentation, I had a longer intro illustrating the value of place. I dropped the slides from this version as they would have no value without the talking. Again, maybe I'll make a video of that. I thought it came out well.
The document discusses harnessing the integrated power of AutoCAD Map 3D and ESRI software through Autodesk's interoperability tools. It introduces Richard Chappell, a geospatial application engineer, and outlines the objective to clarify the CAD to GIS discussion and understand Autodesk's interoperability solutions. The agenda includes identifying issues with CAD and GIS integration, reviewing the technologies, examining solutions, and practicing the solutions.

This document discusses how to use AutoCAD Map for spatial analysis and multi-user editing of geospatial data. It covers topics like working with vector and raster data, creating and managing feature attributes both internal and linked to external databases, performing common spatial analysis techniques like buffers, overlays, networks and more. Live demos are provided to illustrate working with topologies, joins, calculations and multi-step spatial analysis workflows in AutoCAD Map.
This document discusses issues related to managing data across design and facility management organizations. It aims to dispel myths about CAD and GIS data and identify technical and non-technical integration barriers. While data transfer between CAD and GIS formats is technically possible, the primary barriers are related to how the data is organized and used for different purposes throughout the design and facility management lifecycle. The document recommends focusing on common data requirements and developing standards around layering, symbols, geometry, and attributes to better integrate CAD design data into GIS for facility management.
My Autodesk University 2009 presentation. It was about aligning the Data Model to the business and the capabilities of AutoCAD Map for utility modeling
Autodesk uses Feature Data Objects (or FDO) technology to manage live data connections to geospatial data, eliminating the need to import or export data. It allows AutoCAD Map to combine the analysis benefits of GIS software with the flexibility of CAD software.
The document provides an overview of spatial analysis tools in AutoCAD Map 3D. It discusses two approaches to spatial analysis - using topologies of AutoCAD objects or connecting to feature data using FDO. The hands-on exercises demonstrate how to create network and polygon topologies, perform network analysis, and analyze features using buffers and overlays both with and without topologies.
The key to CAD and GIS integration is to recognize that it\'s not CAD to GIS, it\'s Design to As-Built. The technical aspects of migrating data is relatively simple - the real challenge is managing the business aspects of the data

Formal Methods: Whence and Whither? [Martin Fr?nzle Festkolloquium, 2025]Jonathan Bowen
?
Alan Turing arguably wrote the first paper on formal methods 75 years ago. Since then, there have been claims and counterclaims about formal methods. Tool development has been slow but aided by Moore¡¯s Law with the increasing power of computers. Although formal methods are not widespread in practical usage at a heavyweight level, their influence as crept into software engineering practice to the extent that they are no longer necessarily called formal methods in their use. In addition, in areas where safety and security are important, with the increasing use of computers in such applications, formal methods are a viable way to improve the reliability of such software-based systems. Their use in hardware where a mistake can be very costly is also important. This talk explores the journey of formal methods to the present day and speculates on future directions.

The Future of Repair: Transparent and Incremental by Botond De?nesScyllaDB
?
Regularly run repairs are essential to keep clusters healthy, yet having a good repair schedule is more challenging than it should be. Repairs often take a long time, preventing running them often. This has an impact on data consistency and also limits the usefulness of the new repair based tombstone garbage collection. We want to address these challenges by making repairs incremental and allowing for automatic repair scheduling, without relying on external tools.

World Information Architecture Day 2025 - UX at a CrossroadsJoshua Randall
?
User Experience stands at a crossroads: will we live up to our potential to design a better world? or will we be co-opted by ¡°product management¡± or another business buzzword?
Looking backwards, this talk will show how UX has repeatedly failed to create a better world, drawing on industry data from Nielsen Norman Group, Baymard, MeasuringU, WebAIM, and others.
Looking forwards, this talk will argue that UX must resist hype, say no more often and collaborate less often (you read that right), and become a true profession ¡ª in order to be able to design a better world.
