Chapter Network
Introduction to Flickr
Flickrs generous capacity for storing, tagging,
organizing, and following images makes it an ideal
tool for Chapters to showcase, promote, and share
their various initiatives and celebrate their community
partners.
Over a dozen legacy chapters have already launched Flickr accounts.
Membership and 1TB of storage (as of Nov. 2015) are free, provided
you launch a Yahoo mail account to tie it to. This document introduces
features, process, and recommendations for managing your Flickr.
Chapter Network Introduction to Flickr
Flickr offers a robust and rather intuitive user interface
allowing members to sort, tag, describe, organize, and
even map their photo uploads.

Offerings
Even before the fall of the Open Architecture Network, the Chapters
have been asking whether social media platforms were strong enough to
support the needs of online project hosting. Flickr accomplishes many
of the OANs goals with a (not surprisingly) much higher level of UX
design and accessibility.
The following Flickr features are helping chapters promote their missions
and organize their accomplishments:
Images can be uploaded with titles and descriptions, and can be
organized into albums and collections of albums
Photograph metadata such as date taken and camera used are
recognized and catalogued automatically
Images are automatically resized for download and fit any number of
applications; downsized image URLS can be copied and applied to
off-site web pages
Images can be assigned to a map feature
Following, comments and sharing means your network can interact
with content, and you can get a feed of other organizations inspiring
work
Creative Commons licensing can be set for pictures upon upload

Starting an Account
Starting a Flickr account is not exactly straightforward you must first
establish a Yahoo email account for your Chapter, for which youll
need a first and last name and a cell phone number. Flickr is geared
towards individual accounts and does not have dedicated support for
organization accounts (however very many orgs are using it that way).
From there, make sure you have a profile logo img sized for a round
frame and a wide image to use for the header of your page.
Once youve signed up click on your profile image (default at right), and
go to Settings to be able to set or change your screenname, actual
name, and add some about text (highly recommended), and set a
custom url for your page (which can only be done once, so be sure its
a hit).
Image URLS for your website
Getting a web-friendly version of any Flickr image on your web page is
as easy as selecting exactly what size best suits your needs. Flickr offers
a selection of embed codes to set you in the right direction.
If youre just looking for a simple URL, you can find it (under View all
sizes, and then right click / Control click on the size you want to Copy
Link Location) but Flickr wants to ensure that when an image it hosts is
placed on another site, that that image links back to its location on Flickr.

Uploading a batch of pictures can save a lot of time with the use of
Flickrs editing and assignment tools.

Drag everything onto the page and use the left column to set titles,
descriptions, tags, destination album and your Owner settings (i.e.
which creative commons license youd like to set.
This is also a place to create and detail a new photo album. A few
verifications and the album is live! with readily accessible options to
edit your information.

organization canvas. The plus side is you can toggle just about anything or any
group of things from here. Below, we add some pics of Onagawa, Japan, to the map.

will warn you about
saving, but there is no
manual mechanism
to do so. Rest assured
your images have been
mapped.
