origin and ethnicity of the state
The people of Chhattisgarh are famous for its
simplicity and the friendly nature. They are
usually characterized by a lively energy and are
very hard working.
The population of Chhattisgarh mostly consists of
the tribal people. Most of the total tribal population
of the state are present in the Bastar district.
The two languages which are generally spoken in Chhattisgarh
are Hindi and Chhattisgarhi. The Chhattisgadia culture is a
blend of literature, performing arts and crafts.
Most of their decorative pattern which is used in their art
work reflects the religion, mythology, social and political
events, nature and folklore. The other traditional crafts of the
people include painting, woodcarving, bell metal craft,
bamboo ware and tribal jewellery.
The local people have an in-depth knowledge deeply
rooted in areas like sociological and historical
movements of the region.

the regional consciousness.
The famous plays like Jarnail Singh and Unch
Neech written by Khub Chand Baghel highlights
the social problems and difficulties faced by the
lower caste people and the untouchables of
Chhattisgarh.
The tribal groups of Bastar are believed to be the
earliest who worked with metal. They are specialized
in Dhokra casting in bronze and bell metal.
The tribal gods, votive animals, oil lamps, carts and
animals are also made of this metal. As the whole state of
Chhattisgarh is rich in forest resources, the people utilise
it in a number of ways such as making intricate craft
work like carved wooden doors, windows, ceilings,
lintels, masks and sculptures of tribal cult figures.
The abundant hardwoods such as teak,
shisham, sal are also utilised.
The tribal people of Chhattisgarh are also noted for their
Pithora style of painting which is usually done on
occasions like festivals, marriages or other celebrations.
In ancient days the paintings were done mainly on the
floors and walls of temples and houses.
The artists also exhibit their talents on cloth or
paper which mainly depicts mythology and
religious rituals of Chhattisgarh.
The staple food of Chhattisgadia people is rice, jowar,
maize and wheat. Chhattisgarh is popularly known as the
rice bowl of India for its large scale rice production.
