Navigating the Condiment Aisle
Condiments offer endless
choices for adding great taste to
a mealtraditional favorites like
ketchup and mayo to soy sauce,
salsa and beyond. While the
condiment aisle is full of great
flavors, it also contains nutritional
pitfalls, from high fat and sodium
to artificial colors, sugars and
additives.
Not all condiments are created
equal, and when lined up against
other options, all-natural Stubbs
Bar-B-Q sauces can be a better
choice where others fall
nutritionally short.

Know Where Gluten Hides
Think mayo, mustard or ketchup
cant possibly contain gluten?
Think again. Gluten may lurk in
additives such as food starch,
binders, wheat starch, malt, citric
acid, baking powder, mono and di-
glycerides, oils and soy sauce.
Read labels carefully and look for
products labeled gluten-free. An
even safer bet is Certified Gluten-
Free.

Stay Sweet without HFCS
High fructose corn syrup
(HFCS) is a highly processed
ingredient found all over the
condiment aisle, from ketchup
to barbecue sauces to salad
dressings. Most national
brands of barbecue sauce list
it as the first or second
ingredient (Stubbs has none).
Check labels and search for
products that get their
sweetness from
sugar, molasses or other
natural sources.

Forget the Fat, Keep the Taste
Mayonnaise, tartar sauce and
5g ranch dressing are some of the
worst offenders for artery-
0g clogging fats on the condiment
aisle, with about 5 fat grams per
serving for regular mayo, about 7
for a tablespoon of tartar sauce
and about 8 fat grams per
tablespoon of ranch (about the
8g same as a half-cup serving of ice
cream!)
Substitute cocktail sauce, salsa
and barbecue sauce (Stubbs has
6 flavors for any taste preference)
to punch up the flavor without the
added fat.

Keep it Natural
Studies have linked artificial
food dyes and preservatives
like sodium benzoate to a host
of health issues.
Common condiment offenders
include some brands of
mustard, ketchup and barbecue
sauces but not all-natural
Stubbs, which is free of artificial
preservatives, flavors and
colors.

Cut the Sodium, Savor the Flavor
The American Heart Associations
new recommendation on sodium is
less than 1,500 milligrams per day.
Some of the worst sodium
offenders are on the condiment
aisle teriyaki and soy sauces
have up to 1,000 milligrams in a
single tablespoon! Even a basic
condiment like steak sauce packs
nearly 300 mg per tablespoon.
Stubbs Original, Spicy, Hickory
Bourbon, Honey Pecan and Sweet
Heat all have all the great flavor
you want with less than 125 mg
sodium per tablespoon.
