EXERCISE: Hidden Opportunities
Draw several rectangles on the back side of the paper I gave youlike a
comic strip.
Use these squares to document todays morning commute.
Draw pictures or simply write a few words to tell the story.
Make sure to identify any pain points or frustrations you might have
encountered this morning.
How can we turn these pain points into
opportunities?
Lets
talk about
creativity.
What do we
know about
creativity?
Some people are born with it.
They are lucky, gifted, talented.
These lucky people experience
aha moments of inspiration.
Its something right brained people
have the capacity for.
WRONG!!
Everyone has
the innate
ability to be
Lets look at Einstein.
Known for his creativity.
Played violin.
Loved music.
Struggled in many school subjects.
Examiner @ Swiss Patent Office.
Olympia Academy.
Einsteins creativity was a natural result of years
of work, his environment and his social group.
worldly
cloister
OK.
So what do
we actually
know about
creativity?
ITS SOCIAL.
We increase our creative ability by learning from
others, collaborating and sharing.
IT REQUIRES CULTURAL LITERACY.
We must understand what people find meaningful
what truly matters to people.
ITS ALL ABOUT CREATING CONNECTIONS.
In your knowledge. In the way you think. In the way
you interact with others.
IT REQUIRES CURIOSITY.
A fixed mindset is the enemy of creative thinking.
IT IS SCARY.
We fear that we need to create something from
nothing. This creates a bias against creativity.

WHAT BARRIERS
PREVENT YOU
FROM BEING
CREATIVE?
Thinking creatively
requires that we
overcome several fears:
≒ Creating something
from nothing.
≒ Judgment.
≒ Failure and risk.
≒ Embarrassment.
≒ Loss of control.
It can be strengthened and nurtured
through effort and experience.
First, you must believe that your
innovation skills and capabilities are
not set in stone.
You need a growth mindset.

Reframe.
WHAT IS A FRAME?
A belief about the world that colors your
interpretation of people and events.
≒ Break out of the routine stories that
structure our lives.
≒ Rethink experiences people have.
Build a creative
support network.
(like Einstein!)
OFFLINE CHALLENGE:
ASK QUESTIONS
For one day this week, ask questions constantly
without pursuing their answers.
Ask questions, starting with Why? or What if?
Its not important WHAT you ask, simply THAT
you ask.
