Lidar campaign
Presentation of the measurement
WPO developed a fully independent measurement system based on a two-beam
nacelle LiDAR and a specially developed real time data-logger.
The systems acquire the following values (1Hz sampling rate):
• Lidar radial Wind Speed
• Lidar relative direction
• Lidar tilt
• Lidar roll
• Lidar status
• Turbine power
• Ambient temperature
• Ambient pressure
• Ambient humidity
• Nacelle orientation
10
Lidar Power performance campaign
• Campaign objectives
– Accurately and independently measure the turbine power curve.
– Measure the turbine misalignment : yaw error.
Lidar Power performance options
• Depending on the customer needs 2 options are available:
– Option 1 : yaw error estimation, correction and validation.
• Installation and set up of the Lidar (≈ 1 day) ;
• Daily monitoring of the system and yaw measurement trends during the first phase (≈ 15
days*) ;
• Yaw correction recommendation ;
• Technical recommendation ;
• Daily monitoring of the system and the yaw measurement trends during the second phase
(≈ 15 days*);
– Option 2 : yaw error estimation, correction, validation and
operational power curve before and after correction.
• Installation and set up of theWind Iris Lidar (≈ 1 day) ;
• Daily monitoring of the system and yaw measurement trends + operational power curve
including air density correction during the first phase (≈ 30 days*) ;
• Yaw correction recommendation ;
• Technical recommendation ;
• Daily monitoring of the system and yaw measurement trends + operational power curve
including air density correction during the second phase (≈ 30 days*) ;
*Time is wind condition dependant.
Campaign example of results
The nacelle anemometer is showing a
very poor power curve
Comparison of the nacelle anemometer
and the Lidar shows a very good
correlation but indicates that the sonic
anemometer is overestimating the wind
speed.
13
Campaign example of results
This could be explained by the overestimation of wind speed measured by the
nacelle anemometer.The transfer function may need to be adjusted on this
turbine. Discussion are engaged with the wind turbine manufacturer
A power curve based on the Lidar data is better than the guaranteed power curve up
to 10 m/s and then under it.
14
Conclusion
• Various techniques can be used to identify and explain
performance issues. These can be applied one after the
other or in parallel.
• WPO strongly advises to begin with a data analysis study to
identify underperforming turbines.
• Once the underperforming turbines are identified and if the
data analysis does not provide answers then a Lidar
campaign is required to further investigate.
