The deep cervical fascia of the neck consists of the pretracheal fascia and prevertebral fascia. The pretracheal fascia attaches superiorly to structures like the hyoid bone and inferiorly blends with the arch of the aorta. It forms the front of the carotid sheath. The prevertebral fascia attaches superiorly to the base of the skull and inferiorly splits into anterior and posterior layers. The carotid sheath is formed by the pretracheal fascia anteriorly and prevertebral fascia posteriorly. It contains the common carotid artery, internal jugular vein, and vagus nerve.
