What is Design Thinking?
? Design thinking is a mindset. to develop a solution for a given
circumstances, it helps streamlining the thinking through a systematic
process
Distinctions Between Design and Design Thinking
? “Most people make the mistake of thinking design is what it looks like. People
think it’s this veneer — that the designers are handed this box and told, ‘Make it
look good!’ That’s not what we think design is. It’s not just what it looks like and
feels like. Design is how it works.”
? “Everything we have around us has been designed. Design ability is, in fact, one
of the three fundamental dimensions of human intelligence. Design, science, and
art form an ‘and’ not an ‘or’ relationship to create the incredible human cognitive
ability.”
All students of 3rd semester shall use the following
guidelines for Design Engineering 1(a)
? Design Engineering is based on globally accepted Design Thinking methodology. Design thinking phases
may be divided into six simple yet iterative steps shown below:

Design Engineering – 1A
Phase-1
Team formation design Engineering. Allocate guides to each team.
Phase-2
Arrange Visit /Interviewing/ identify perceptions of user/people/field work/summarization
(All students make one loge book for filed work and mention note as well as there experience
with Date and Time/ place /location )
Phase -3
After field observation prepare AEIOU summary sheet as per loge book data of
DE team by Group discussion.
Phase-4
Prepare Empathize canvas
Phase-5
Prepare Ideation canvas
Phase-6
Prepare Product Development Canvas
Team formation

? What Happen when Faculty select team?
The creation of Velcro was actually inspired by burrs when Swiss
engineer, George de Mestral, found them on his dog’s fur
Materials researchers and engineers at Kansai University, Japan
saw amazing potential in the structure of the mosquito’s mouth
Calla Lily Based Impeller
Jay Harmon, founder of PAX Scientific,
designed a fan on the shape of a
hurricane,
but also created an incredibly
efficient impeller in the same
spiralling design as a
Calla Lily.

Harare, Zimbabwe,

self-cooling
mounds of termites

How to? - Process
?Information's are gathered via ethnographic
methods:
? Notes
? Photos
? Videos
? Interviews
? Field observations
And so on…
Activities
?These are goal-directed sets of actions—paths
towards things people want to accomplish.
? What are the modes people work in, and the specific
activities and processes they go through?
Activities
?Someone (User) is involved…
?- How?
?- What actually is going on?
?- Why it is going on?
?- How it is going on?
?- What is involved?
Environments
? It include the entire arena where activities take place.
? What is the character and function of the space overall, of each
individual's spaces, and of shared spaces?
Environments – The Surroundings…
? - Where (Activity) is happening?
? - What are circumstances?
? - Time effects, any?
? - Seasonal effects, any?
? - Person effects, any?
? - Operational effects, any?
Why variations
Or
What versions
What governs…?
Interactions
? These are between a person and someone or something else; they
are the building blocks of activities.
? What is the nature of routine and special interactions between
people; between people and objects in their environment, and across
distances?
Interactions
? - Who are involved? Why? How?
? - What (users) are holding/ operating/ using…
? Human Extensions
? - How the contacts are in action?
? - Action vs. Reaction…
Type of Interaction
1.People -People
2.People-Object
3.Object-Object
Objects
? These are building blocks of the environment, key elements
sometimes put to complex or unintended uses (thus changing their
function, meaning and context).
? What are the objects and devices people have in their environments
and how do they relate to their activities?
Users
? Users are the people whose behaviours, preferences,
and needs are being observed.
? Who is there? What are their roles and relationships?
What are their values and prejudices?
