The document discusses variable precision rough set theory and fuzzy rough set approaches. It provides an overview and introduction to rough sets and basic concepts like information systems, indiscernibility relations, set approximations, and reducts. It then discusses extensions to handle uncertain or imprecise information, including variable precision rough sets that allow some degree of misclassification, and fuzzy rough sets that use fuzzy set theory. The key concepts of lower and upper approximations are generalized for these extended models.
Information updated and conveyed by the neural network systemsinscit2006
油
The document discusses using neural networks and information theory to model how information is conveyed in the brain. It presents a neural network model that was trained on Walsh patterns as stimuli to test how much information could be encoded and decoded. Computational experiments showed the model was able to code and decode information by implementing an artificial neural network, though more research is still needed to apply this to practical communication systems.
High dimensional Data Visualization using Star Coordinates on Three Dimensionsinscit2006
油
This paper enhances the existing 2D star coordinates technique for visualizing high dimensional data and extends it to 3 dimensions. The authors introduce new parameters to improve the visualization and avoid overlapping points. Data points are represented as vectors on 3D axes based on their attribute values. Overlapping points can be distinguished using wireframes or varying opacity. The technique is demonstrated on the iris dataset.
A Metadata-Driven Approach to Computing Financial Analytics in a Relational D...inscit2006
油
This document discusses building a financial analytics system within a relational database using a metadata-driven approach. It describes representing analytic formulas as metadata in an annotated directed acyclic graph stored as a table. An interpreter is implemented as a special graph traversal algorithm in SQL to efficiently compute multiple analytic formulas for all data at once within the database layer. The paper describes an actual system built at Reuters that computes thousands of formulas per second on a $10,000 computer using this novel breadth-first graph traversal approach.

油
The document proposes a visualization called the CirSA (Circle-Sector-Arc) Chart to represent the relevance of terms in a search query using a circle divided into sectors with arcs showing relevance. It describes how the CirSA Chart works and previous tests showing users could correctly interpret queries represented in this format. The document then describes new tests examining if users can decode Boolean operators and specify them on a CirSA Chart, as well as represent phrases.

Formal Methods: Whence and Whither? [Martin Fr辰nzle Festkolloquium, 2025]Jonathan Bowen
油
Alan Turing arguably wrote the first paper on formal methods 75 years ago. Since then, there have been claims and counterclaims about formal methods. Tool development has been slow but aided by Moores Law with the increasing power of computers. Although formal methods are not widespread in practical usage at a heavyweight level, their influence as crept into software engineering practice to the extent that they are no longer necessarily called formal methods in their use. In addition, in areas where safety and security are important, with the increasing use of computers in such applications, formal methods are a viable way to improve the reliability of such software-based systems. Their use in hardware where a mistake can be very costly is also important. This talk explores the journey of formal methods to the present day and speculates on future directions.

The Future of Repair: Transparent and Incremental by Botond DenesScyllaDB
油
Regularly run repairs are essential to keep clusters healthy, yet having a good repair schedule is more challenging than it should be. Repairs often take a long time, preventing running them often. This has an impact on data consistency and also limits the usefulness of the new repair based tombstone garbage collection. We want to address these challenges by making repairs incremental and allowing for automatic repair scheduling, without relying on external tools.

Developer Experience is Dead! Long Live Developer Experience!
In this keynote-style session, well take a detailed, granular look at the barriers to productivity developers face today and modern approaches for removing them. 10x developers may be a myth, but 10x organizations are very real, as proven by the influential study performed in the 1980s, The Coding War Games.
Right now, here in early 2025, we seem to be experiencing YAPP (Yet Another Productivity Philosophy), and that philosophy is converging on developer experience. It seems that with every new method, we invent to deliver products, whether physical or virtual, we reinvent productivity philosophies to go alongside them.
But which of these approaches works? DORA? SPACE? DevEx? What should we invest in and create urgency behind today so we dont have the same discussion again in a decade?
