Monotremes are a special group of mammals that share characteristics with reptiles. They lay soft-shelled eggs and incubate them for 10 days like reptiles. Monotremes also have a cloaca, a single bodily opening, like reptiles. There are only two monotreme species - echidnas, which are spiny anteaters found in Australia and New Guinea, and have either short or long beaks, and platypuses, which are one of the few poisonous mammals and live in water hunting for food.
