Drake-Views
Case study 1
By Rajel Ullah
Front cover
This album is by Drake called The views and the album cover
and advert is symbolic and iconic as he has the same style
throughout his music videos, the theme tends to be very
close to Drake and his personal life. First announced as Views
from the 6, reference to his hometown of Toronto, Ontario. In
his views album he has songs like; 'Keep the family close', 'U
with me?' and 'one dance'.
Drake links back his music to his own personal life and his CD
cover is extreme close up of the CN Canada Tower in Toronto
where he was born. It can also link back to the view that you
can get from the tower itself. The fact that Drake is sitting on
the tower, show that he is on top the word both literally and
metaphorically.
The colour theme is grey and white which leads to this very
eery atmosphere, it makes the album look very serious and
unique as they tend to be full of colour. But the light and
simple colours makes it stand out more as it is symbolic of
Drake’s music, deep, meaningful and relatable to the younger
audiences- as it is popular culture music. This front album
cover is rather minimal and optimistic as there is no text
included so the images speaks for itself.
Back This is the back cover of the album and there is a list of
different songs which is in the album this is to inform those
that purchase it before they buy it. The title ‘VIEWS’ is on
the back rather than the front because the image on the
front cover expresses itself by putting texts makes the image
less attractive. The font of the text is plain, simple and
minimal this allows the audience to be more aware of the
features rather than the text. There is all the record labels
logo down below to let their audience know where their
album get distributed from. Also there is a unique barcode
on the right hand side, this is here for enabling people to
purchase the album at stores.
CD Cover The CD cover is white and black this is extremely minimal as these
colours are used throughout the whole CD album. The big bold text
across the white background allows the audience to see what the
album is called also in the title there is small eyes. The reason for
this is that to have a ‘VIEW’ you need to ‘SEE’ so the eyes represent
that. The white background contrasts of the black text across the
CD very well. And again there is the logo’s of the record labels that
Drake is signed by such as Republic Records, Cash Money, Young
Money and OVO.
Inspirations and own ideas for CD Album
From this case study I have been influenced by the colour scheme as it carries
this mysterious and gloomy atmosphere to it representing that the album will have
many surprises such as different features on songs. So for my CD cover I want to
include dark grey clouds with a black background rather than white because I
want to keep the theme of mysteriousness.
