Earth is a closed system with fixed resources and waste that cannot be disposed of. It consists of four main interacting subsystems: 1) the geosphere refers to the solid Earth composed of rocks and minerals, 2) the hydrosphere is the totality of Earth's water in all phases, 3) the atmosphere is a mixture of gases surrounding the planet, and 4) the biosphere includes all life forms on Earth. The 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo released sulfur dioxide into the atmosphere, temporarily lowering global temperatures by 0.5 degrees and devastating the surrounding region through lahars and silicosis.
