Horror is the emotion that is present in all living things with emotions. It is
experienced after seeing something ghastly or shocking. One of the greatest sources
of terror is obscurity or ambiguity of the viewer not knowing what is real or unreal,
true or false. Horror films are designed to frighten the audience and engage them in
their worst fears, while captivating and entertaining at the same time. Horror films
often focus on the darker side of life, on what is forbidden and strange. These films
play with societys fears, its nightmares and vulnerability, the terror of the unknown,
the fear of death, the lost of identity, and the fear of sexuality. Horror films are
generally set in spooky old mansions, fog-ridden areas or dark locales with unknown
human, supernatural or grotesque creatures lurking about such as ghosts, monsters
and even the mere presence of evil.
In these two horror films, "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Texas Chainsaw
Massacre" the main killers have likenesses and variances between each other.
According to their past experiences, their victims of murder, and weapons used.
In the horror film, "A Nightmare On Elm Street", took place in a town called Elm
Street. It's about the teenaged children of Elm Street and how they all start to die, one-
by-one, allegedly being killed off by something when they are fast sleep. Something
in their dreams was murdering the children of Elm Street. He dresses in a red and
black sweater with razor sharp knives on his hand. His name was Freddy Kreuger the
serial killer of Elm Street, and he would abduct young children and burn them in a
furnace. A girl named Nancy Thompson who always manages to escape the killer is
determined to find out what was happening to the children and how they were being
murdered in their sleep. She has to do all of this before its too late and she too
becomes a victim of murder. She later found out that the children killer is a long dead
serial killer that had been punished by burning him to death by vengeful parents at
that time.
In the other horror film mentioned earlier, "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", a serial killer
named Thomas Hewitt, also known as Leatherface, murdered people who would pass
by their small Texas town. Unlike the film "A Nightmare On Elm Street", the town is
secluded and only a number of people live there. Thomas Hewitt, who was abandoned
as a baby and turns into a murderer. Unlike Freddy Krueger, Thomas first tortured his
victims in horrific ways such as by skinning them alive and many other horrific
methods. He then makes a mask from a victims face skinned from the victim itself,
because his face was disfigured when he was born and got abandoned by his parents
afterwards. He takes the people he captured to his basement where he would murder
his victims with a chainsaw, which people soon thought he was in love with. There
were absolutely no survivors reported.
The similarities between both the murderers in the films are that they both are serial
killers and they have the similar reason on why they started to become serial killers
which is obviously revenge on their past lives. They both have been treated wrongly
by the society and thus making them feel unwanted and vengeful. Though it is wrong
for them to commit these sins, I personally have the upmost sympathy towards them
because they did not receive enough love in their past lives and have been through a
very rough time in their past.
To sum it all up, I think that for every sin that a person commits. There must be a
story or reason behind it, because all living things including animals and insects are
born with the emotion love, and that they would not commit any sins without solid
reasoning or purpose. There is this saying There is a means to every end. A root to
any cause. Sometimes the root is more evil than any cause, though it's the cause that is
usually most vilified.
 Michael Connelly, The Poet.
