In what ways does your media
product useuse, develop, develop or
challenge formschallenge forms and
conventions of real media
products?
In order to create a successful media product there
are a number of vital research, planning and
production skills necessary.
Researching your target audience
enables you to construct you media
product accordingly, especially with
ancillary texts. In a magazine
targeted for male audiences you
would expect it to have
advertisements that would appeal to
its gender, therefore knowing your
audience is a key factor
To use conventions of real media products I
began with I constructing a hypothesis as a
way to set a plan of action, as to how I wanted
my horror film to turn out through seeing
different forms of convention that make a
horror film scary. I researched who the
appropriate target audiences are for horror
films, through statistics I was informed on the
average age and target audience for
individuals who watch horror films
The conventions of horror trailer involve a number of
dramatic camera anglesdramatic camera angles when showing the main
characters which I feel our trailer did. The way we used
high angles and point of view shots can make you evoke
fear which is essential in making a horror trailer.
These are cameras that watch over the area around the train
station and films over the tracks. Although we couldn’t use
footage from the CCTV camera, we developed this by using a
hand-held camera to film at a high angle to watch the girls as
they walk towards the train station platform.
Developing conventions of real
media products
In the majority of horror film trailers you can
normally tend to see a substantial amount of
either the victim and a little insight of what’s
currently happening in their life now or either
occurrences in their past or show more of the
villain and their motives behind their malicious
actions. But we thought that we would challenge
the conventions of some media products and not
put a back story to the two victims, to show them
as just normal girls. However to reveal our villains
motives we used titles, where we added phrases
such as ‘he sees everything’.
