How to find the right books Start by reading your text books or recommended readings and scan the reference lists of these. Search the  library catalogue  by author, title or keywords. You can limit your search by date of publication. Click on the item to find its call number and availability. Go to the shelf and find the book.
Basic Search in the Online Catalogue From the library catalogue you can locate material held in the library and at other campuses. You can place a hold, tell if an item is in or out, renew items, find items on reserve, and check your personal account details.  The catalogue lists books, periodicals, videos, DVDs

Selecting the Type of Search If you know the authors name, the exact title or the exact subject heading select:  AUTHOR  or  TITLE  or  SUBJECT. In exact searches you must type the first word and any other words in the correct order

Using Library Databases If you discover that all the good books are out of the library already or the books available are old and dated  do not dispair, more current information is available at your fingertips and you dont even need to leave home. Electronic journal databases are a large collection of journal titles in specific subject areas which can be searched from your computer.
 You can use a database when : You need more information than your course texts or readings can provide There are few relevant books available on your topic You need specific detailed information or statistics You want to include the latest research findings to support the statements you are making in your assignment You see yourself as a scholar who really wants to engage with the ideas and concepts presented within your course paper

How to find Newspaper Articles At the Bill Robertson Library you can access newspapers through the Electronic Database under  Databases and Article Searching . Scroll down to New Zealand then select  ANZ Newsstand
Choose: Basic, then limit your search by date. Type in your topic.
