France had conflicts with Britain in the 18th century that led to the destruction of its first empire, including the War of the Austrian Succession and Seven Years War. Britain took India, Canada, and French territories in the West Indies, while France sold Louisiana to Spain and later the U.S. A slave revolt in Saint Domingue in 1791 further weakened France's Caribbean holdings, and Haiti gained independence in 1804.
