ELECTRICITY:
THE BASICS
ELECTRICITY
 The 鍖ow of electrical energy
Two elements: power source + components
POWER SOURCE
AC: alternating current DC: direct current
POWER SOURCE
Coin Cell Battery
Lithium Polymer (LiPo) Battery
Power

Ground
-
COMPONENTS
Sensors: convert other energy to electrical energy (input)
Actuators: convert electrical energy to other forms (output)
SENSORS
 Switch, knob, button
 Light sensor: photocell
 Sound: Microphone
Getting started with soft circuitry
SENSORS
 Accelerometers: movement
 Gyroscope: rotation
 Flex sensor: bend
 Force sensor(FSR): pressure
 Stretch sensor
ACTUATORS
 Light: LEDs
 Movement: motors
LEDs Sewable LED sequins
Neopixel
smart RGB LEDs
RESISTORS
 color means resistance(value)
 talk about it later
CONDUCTORS
 power, components and conductive connections.
Wire Alligator clips
CIRCUIT: POWER + COMPONENT + CONNECTION
WHATS GOING ON INSIDE THE
CIRCUIT?
VOLTAGE, CURRENT AND RESISTANCE
 Voltage(V): 3 Volts (3V)
 Current(I): 1 Amp(1A)
 Resistance(R): 3 Ohms
Getting started with soft circuitry
CIRCUIT: POWER + COMPONENT + CONNECTION
resistor helps add more resistance to reduce currents

GOOD NEWS
Sewable LED sequins
MAKING YOUR FIRST SOFT
CIRCUIT!
MATERIALS & COMPONENTS
CONDUCTIVE THREAD
Pros:
 easy to use
 multiple functions
Cons:
 easily get short circuit
Tips:
 carefully 鍖nish
 insulation
CONDUCTIVE FABRICS
Pros:
 large size
 different tools
 different textile
Cons:
 resistance
Tips:
 iron on / vinyl cut
 for making buttons and switches
CONDUCTIVE FABRIC TAPE
 Not copper tape
Pros:
 longer length
 adhesive
Cons:
 limited width
Tips:
use it to run route for LEDs
CONDUCTIVE RIBBON
Pros:
 sewing machine
 3 wires
 solderable
Cons:
 not easy to solder
 only 3 wires
Tips:
make a tube to insulate it
SEWABLE LEDS
SEWABLE BATTERY HOLDERS
SEWABLE BUTTONS & SWITCHES
YOU ALSO NEED SOME TOOLS
MULTIMETER
 Measure voltage, current, resistance
 continuity
WIRE CUTTER
 To cut wires
WIRE STRIPPER
 To strip wires
NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS
FABRIC SHEARS
 To cut fabrics ONLY!!!
PINKING SHEARS
cut a zigzag edge in fabric
 to prevent it from fraying.
THREAD CUTTERS
 To trim threads
NEEDLE THREADER
EMBROIDERY HOOP
To stretch fabric for easier sewing
FRAY CHECK / CLEAR NAIL POLISH
 prevent conductive thread from fraying
LETS SEW!
PROTOTYPE YOUR FIRST LED CIRCUIT
Getting started with soft circuitry
Getting started with soft circuitry
SOFT CIRCUITRY STEPS
 Lay out components
 Draw routes
Use conductive thread to sew down components
 Continue with running stitch
 Finishing:
No traditional knot for conductive thread
 Go through many times
Fray check / clear nail polish

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SEWING CONDUCTIVE THREAD WITH NON-CONDUCTIVE
Do not rely on knots with conductive thread
 Easily tangled >> be careful
Easily fray >> use nail polish
 NEVER cross
