The document describes a 4-week training course on fundamentals of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The objectives of the course are to build participants' capacity to use GIS data in their work, train personnel in open source and commercial GIS software, analyze geo-information problems, and establish referral networks. The course outline includes 12 modules that cover topics such as GIS history, platforms and software, database formats, map projections, digitization, attribute data, geoprocessing, spatial analysis, data visualization, and a case study. The training methods include lectures, software demonstrations, exercises and field work using GPS devices.

1. Geo-Planning for Advanced Development (GPAD)
4-weeks training on
Fundamentals of Geographic Information System (GIS)
Course Objectives
A geographic information system (GIS) is a system designed to capture, store, manipulate,
analyse, manage, and present spatial or geographic data. GIS applications are tools that allow
users to create interactive queries (user-created searches), analyse spatial information, edit
data in maps, and present the results of all these operations. GIS sometimes refers to
geographic information science, the science underlying geographic concepts, applications,
and systems. Geographic Information System has gained increased importance and
widespread acceptance as tools for decision-making in planning in developing countries
because of its wide range of applications in natural resources and environmental
managements. The objectives of the training program are as follows:
? To build up the capacity of the participants that will help them use the GIS data in
their implementation process as like, finding out hard to reach areas
? To train up key personnel in open source (QGIS) or Commercial Soft (ArcGIS)
extensively.
? Analyse Geo-information problems encountered in professional domain and
develop, apply the appropriate methods for studying and/or solving the problems
? Establishing better referral networks
? Identifying facility locations
