Group discussion is a process where a small group of candidates discuss a given topic within a time limit while being observed by panelists. It tests a person's ability to work in a team and contribute ideas while also listening to others' views. Key points for an effective group discussion include having adequate subject knowledge, strong communication and listening skills, contributing while also allowing others to speak, and summarizing the discussion at the end in a neutral manner. The goal is to evaluate how participants behave in a group setting, consider both individual and group objectives, and remain open-minded when views differ.

The topic may be general or specific.
For example : Kashmir conflict
The candidates are given a time limit for discussing this

4. Points to be kept in mind while participating in a GDPoints to be kept in mind while participating in a GD
Adequate subject matter:
We should have subject knowledge
and be well aware of the latest happenings
around us, not just in India but also around the
world as well.
Subject knowledge is a prerequisite
while we are preparing for a GD because we
shall then have the power to steer the
conversation to whichever direction we want to.
5. Reading :
Reading not only adds to your knowledge database but
enhances our vocabulary and skills as well.
Choose magazines that are rich in content.
Be aware of the topics that are repeated.
Panelists observe the body language as well.
Try to be the first and also the last one to speak.
6. Communication skills:
Much before the actual GD, rehearse well to improve
the communication skills.
You can sit with a group of friends and choose a topic
and indulge in a friendly banter.
Not only will this increase your knowledge, you will be a
better speaker by the time it is time for Group Discussion.
Listening skills:
Just speaking throughout the discussion doesn't
make you smart, you should give others a chance.
Monotony is not good.
7. Conclusion:
It is not necessary that you conclude by a positive or a
negative view point, but to summarize the discussion well and
being neutral gives you an edge over others.
8. The GD is to check :
How you behave, participate and contribute in a group?
How much importance do you give to the group
objective as well as your own?
How well do you listen to the view points of
others?
How open-minded you are in accepting views
contrary to your own?
