Oviedo is the capital city of the Principality of Asturias located in northern Spain. It dates back to the early Middle Ages and serves as the commercial, religious, administrative and university center of the region. While the name in Asturian is Uvi辿u or Uvieo, the official Spanish name is Oviedo, which has uncertain origins proposed to include Celtic, Latin, or references to sheep. The symbols of the city are its shield containing titles around a cross and royal crown, and its blue flag with the shield in the center.
