Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), also known as anabolic steroids, are a class of synthetic hormones that mimic the effects of testosterone. They are legally prescribed to treat conditions involving deficiency of steroid hormones, but are often misused recreationally by bodybuilders and athletes seeking to improve physical performance and appearance. Long-term misuse can lead to serious health risks such as heart disease, liver damage, high blood pressure, and behavioral issues like aggression.

? Prescribed legally to treat conditions such as steroid hormone deficiencies ? Steroid hormone deficiencies are: delayed puberty, low testosterone, diseases resulting in loss of lean muscle mass (I.E. cancer & AIDS) ? Used and abused by athletes and other to improve athletic performances or physical appearance.
? Users will inject ten to hundred times more than doses prescribed for medical conditions ? They are used continuously, rather than intermittently(taken a period of weeks, months or years off the drugs and then started again also known as “cycling”) ? Users combine many different types of steroids to maximize the effectiveness, known as “stacking”
? Severe acne ? Breast growth (gynecomastia) and shrinking of testicles in men ? Voice deepening & growth of facial hair in women ? High blood plessure ? Cardiovascular diseases/problems ? Liver damage/disease including cancer ? Kidney damage ? Aggressive behavior ( an alleged side effect
? Many believe that steroid users develop what’s known as “roid rage” ? Due to higher levels of testosterone in individuals who use they believe this ? I do not agree to an extent, there are many steroid users who do not develop this; it may be due to belief of the users that they need to be angry or set themselves up mentally that they will ? Or taking super high doses resulting in chemical imbalances in body to which would cause mood swings
? They do not cause the same type of high as other drugs, meaning they do not interfere with dopamine receptors but they can be reinforcing which can lead to addiction ? “Studies shown that animals will self administer steroids when given the opportunity” – This was interesting and surprising to learn
? If given the opportunity; didn’t have to pay for it, and monitored by a doctor would you use steroids? Why or why not?
