HIV induces apoptosis in both infected and uninfected CD4+ T cells through multiple pathways. Several viral proteins (Tat, Nef, Vpr, Vpu, gp160) and host proteins (TNF, FasL, TRAIL, IFNα) can have either pro-apoptotic or anti-apoptotic effects depending on their concentration levels. This document summarizes a study examining monocyte apoptosis sensitivity in HIV-1 disease. The study aims to investigate how interferon stimulated genes (ISGs) that are differentially expressed between chronic and advanced HIV disease stages impact monocyte apoptosis. Specifically, the study creates stable cell lines with inducible expression of IFI6 (an anti-apoptotic gene) and IFI27 (a pro-apoptotic gene) to determine the effects of these genes on monocyte apoptosis sensitivity in response to cadmium chloride treatment.
