Communication
? Occurs through seeing, hearing speaking, reading,
writing, signing, and gesturing (110).
? Language is the formal code of abstract symbols used by
a group of people to communicate (111).
? Speech- primarily the forming and production of oral
language.
? Enhanced by gestures, manual signs, picture symbols, and written
symbols (112).
Speech-Language Impairment
? When a person is unable to interact, basic needs can go
unmet and social interactions become strained to the
point of isolation and personal frustration (114).
? It is imperative that communication skills be developed so
students can interact with their environments (114).
? Augmentative and Alternative Communication:
? Combination of communication tools available to an individual,
including any speech, vocalizations, gestures, and communication
behaviors related to specific methods and devices
? May supplement, enhance, or replace conventional communication
methods
? Augmentative-helps the student use the communication they have
? Alternative- bypasses the oral system (114).
