The Panopticon (derived from a Greek word meaning all-seeing) is a type of
building developed by the English philosopher and social theorist Jeremy
Bentham. He visited Russia in 1786 and developed the architecture after observing
the workers there.
The plan consists of a rotunda with an inspection house at the centre. It works on
the principle that people will regulate their own behaviour if they are unable to
know if theyre being watched. Bentham conceived his basic plan as being
applicable to a wide variety of buildings, but it was used only for a specific
purpose.
