Guru Nanak Jayanti is also called Guru Nanak's Prakash Utsav. It is one of the best festivals of Sikhism. This day is marked as Guru Nanak's birth anniversary. Guru Nanak is the founder of Sikh religion. According to the Hindu calendar, this festival is celebrated on the Kartika Poornima. Guru Nanak is the first Sikh Guru. He was born in the year 1469 and died in 1539. This festival is celebrated by the people of many countries such as India, Pakistan and some parts of England. Other than Sikhs, the Nanakpanthi Hindus are also the followers of Guru Nanak's philosphy. They also celebrate this festival. The celebration starts with 'Prabhat Pheris', which start from the Gurudwaras at early morning and then proceeds around the localities singing 'hymns'. Two days before Gurupurab, 'Akhand Path' is held in Gurudwaras. A day before Gurupurab, nagarkirtan is held. In this procession, they carry the Sikh flag which is known as 'Nishan Sahib' with the palki of Guru Granth Sahib. Team of people perform some martial arts known as 'Gatka'.
