This document provides an introduction to biotechnology. It defines biotechnology as the application of living organisms or their components to develop useful products. Biotechnology draws from various basic sciences and is a rapidly growing field. The advancement of biotechnology will lead to new drugs, drug delivery systems, diagnostic agents, and procedures. This will expand the role of pharmacists to include patient counseling on biotechnological products, educating people on new drugs and their effects, monitoring patient compliance, and dispensing some diagnostic tools. Some examples of biotechnological products currently available in Bangladesh are erythropoetin, human insulin, enoxaparin sodium, filgastrim, hepatitis vaccine, influenza vaccine, and others.
2. What is Biotechnology?
Biotechnology is a vast and rapidly growing branch
of science.
It is the product of interaction between Biology and
Technology.
It is an integrated application of techniques to draw
benefits from the properties and capacities of living
organisms for the welfare of mankind.
Biotechnology is an applied science and has many
basic sciences incorporated in it e.g. Microbiology,
Genetics, Biochemistry, Immunology, chemistry,
industrial technology etc.
3. Impact of Biotechnology on Pharmacy practice:
Advancement in Biotechnology will invent newer drugs,
newer drug delivery system, new diagnostic agents and
procedures etc.
Pharmacist¡¯s role:
?Patient counseling regarding health care and
biotechnological products.
?Educating the people regarding these newer drugs, their
probable new interactions and adverse effects.
?Monitoring of patient compliance and effectiveness of the
medication.
?Dispensing some diagnostic tools and interpretation of
results.
Thus, the role of Pharmacist will expand because of
increased number of drugs and diagnostic tools.
