Loves good food and dining.
     Not only physics.
1. Fundamentals.
1. Fundamentals.
Everything else is combinatorics.
2. Be prepared.
2. Be prepared.
It is not because you know what
to cook that you know how to cook it.
3. The proof of the pudding
3. The proof of the pudding
Not everything is what it looks like.
4. The thrill of discovery.
4. The thrill of discovery.
And of getting it completely wrong.
5. Its not about the recipe.
5. Its not about the recipe.
Its the inspiration and passion you add.
6. There are many cookbooks.
6. There are many cookbooks.
They cannot replace the wisdom of the cook,
nor the stories that she tells while cooking.
7. I love to cook with vodka.
7. I love to cook with vodka.
I sometimes even add it to the food.
No matter how much creativity goes
into it, cooking is an art. Or perhaps I
should say a craft. It abides by absolute
rules, physics, chemistry, etc. and that
means that unless you understand the
science you cannot reach the art.

Editor's Notes

  1. You know what this feels like. Ladies and Gents, when I was younger, students in the first year of physics. We’d grill them. This is some cosmic Karma, I guess. Anyway - the topic for show &tell
  2. lightning talk had 14 slides classic mistake: way too many slides Frances killed x of them - yes, my wife knows my physics professor - that tells you something allready. Breek ei. Gebruikte Irina eigenlijk slides ?
  3. Irina never used slides. But 7 minutes and only the blackboard is hard. Let’s pretend this is a blackboard - reason I had was to many is that I wanted physics examplles. This talk could be about a demonstration - Jan asked this But that would not teach you about Irina.
  4. and I could quip about how Irina was a master approximator (mainly because most of what she taught cannot be exactly solved.) Demonstration - break eggs. But that would not teach you about the important things Irina taught me. What does Irina have to say about cooking.
  5. And I think she projected this on her students. Some people seem to believe about the 7 rules of X.
  6. And I think she projected this on her students. Some people seem to believe about the 7 rules of X.
  7. And I think she projected this on her students. Some people seem to believe about the 7 rules of X.
  8. Seven minutes, seven rules First thing I learned whas about fundamentals But if you master the fundamentals, no problem.
  9. Best example is during exams. You remember - get to convince her to pick your own question - and make you think you got away with it. exams with Irina. pick your own question you need to train, exercise… H

  11. In the late years: Quantum physics applies to a lot of things. You do not know what something is until you measure. Try new things. Irina was a master at convicing people to try. If she hadn’t me, I would not be here. what is this - after my second year, I thought I had egg on my face (pick up eggs) - throw in audience… - she conviced me otherwise - imagine my surprise when I passed. went into PhD

  13. Later on, phD - again much freedom. Enjoy the thrill Errors never get documented. Or corrected. Once you went off the deep end, you realize
  14. Generalize this, you know that
  15. There are many cuisinse and cookbooks And there is one last - real culinary rule that came from the stories. In the trend of live a little.

  17. The final thing I’d like to share. Life a litte. Summarizing, these rules are about really understand science/life/cooking - not its techniques. I’d like to close with a quote from Alton Brown
  18. I am very grateful to have met that woman that understands the science and the 7 rules. Fundamentals - be prepared - The proof in in the pudding - The thrill of discovery - It’s not the recipe - There are many cookbooks - Try cooking with vodka. Thank you for understanding the science and teaching us the art.
